Can You Be Offside in Your Own Half?

Quick Answer

No. Offside only applies in the opponent's half of the pitch. A player in their own half cannot be in an offside position, no matter how far ahead of the defenders they are.

In this lesson

No. Offside only applies in the opponent's half of the pitch. This is explicitly stated in Law 11: a player is in an offside position only if they are in the opponent's half and nearer to the opponent's goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. If either condition isn't met, there is no offside.

What if the attacker is on the halfway line?

Being exactly on the halfway line puts a player in their own half for offside purposes — they cannot be offside. The player must cross the halfway line into the opponent's half before the law applies.

This matters on long diagonal balls: even if every defender is gathered in their own penalty area, a striker who receives the ball at the centre circle is not offside.

Can a goalkeeper be offside?

A goalkeeper can technically be in an offside position, but it is essentially impossible to be penalised for it. To be offside, a goalkeeper would need to be in the opponent's half and be actively involved in play — an extremely rare scenario in normal matches.

The goalkeeper counts as one of the opponents used to judge the offside line for outfield players. In the unusual case where the goalkeeper advances to the halfway line, attackers behind the last outfield defender but still ahead of the goalkeeper would not be offside.

When does the halfway-line rule affect real match situations?

The most common situation is a long clearance or goalkeeper's distribution into the opponent's half. If the receiving attacker is positioned in their own half when the ball leaves the boot, no offside can be called regardless of how the play develops after.
