FIFA seeds the 48 qualified nations into four pots of 12 based on the FIFA World Ranking. The draw produces 12 groups labeled A through L, with one team from each pot in every group. Host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) are placed in Pot 1 and assigned to fixed group slots ahead of the draw.

Why is there a Round of 32 in 2026?
When the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA needed an extra knockout round to absorb the larger field. The old format went 8 groups → Round of 16 → quarter-finals. The new format goes 12 groups → Round of 32 → Round of 16 → quarter-finals. So there's one more round than fans are used to from past World Cups.
