World Cup 2026 Format Explained

The 2026 World Cup has 48 teams in 12 groups of four. The top two teams from each group advance, plus the eight best third-place teams, making 32 teams in the knockout round.

In this lesson

The 2026 World Cup is a 48-team tournament — the largest in history. Teams are split into 12 groups of 4. Each team plays 3 group-stage matches. The top 2 from every group advance automatically, and the 8 best third-place finishers also advance. That gives 32 teams in the knockout round, starting with a brand-new Round of 32.

How are the 48 World Cup teams split into groups?

FIFA seeds the 48 qualified nations into four pots of 12 based on the FIFA World Ranking. The draw produces 12 groups labeled A through L, with one team from each pot in every group. Host nations (USA, Canada, Mexico) are placed in Pot 1 and assigned to fixed group slots ahead of the draw.

How many teams advance from each World Cup group?

The top 2 teams in every group advance automatically — that's 24 teams. On top of that, the 8 best third-place teams across all 12 groups also advance, ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, and tiebreakers. That brings the total to 32 teams in the knockout bracket. See /world-cup/best-third-place for how that ranking works.

Why is there a Round of 32 in 2026?

When the tournament expanded from 32 to 48 teams, FIFA needed an extra knockout round to absorb the larger field. The old format went 8 groups → Round of 16 → quarter-finals. The new format goes 12 groups → Round of 32 → Round of 16 → quarter-finals. So there's one more round than fans are used to from past World Cups.

What is the World Cup 2026 bracket structure?

After the group stage, the bracket runs:

  1. Round of 32 — 16 matches
  2. Round of 16 — 8 matches
  3. Quarter-finals — 4 matches
  4. Semi-finals — 2 matches
  5. Third-place playoff — 1 match
  6. Final — 1 match

Once you're in the knockout stage, one loss ends your tournament. Tied games go to extra time, then penalties.

How is the 2026 World Cup bracket seeded?

FIFA pre-determines bracket positions before the tournament starts. Group winners and runners-up get fixed slots in the bracket — for example, the winner of Group A always plays a specific runner-up in the Round of 32. The 8 best third-place teams also slot into pre-assigned positions based on which groups they came from. This means the bracket path is mostly known once group standings are final.
