The 2026 World Cup knockout stage runs from the Round of 32 to the final — 5 rounds total. Once you're in, one loss ends your tournament. Matches tied after 90 minutes go to 30 minutes of extra time. If still level, a penalty shootout decides the winner. There is no away goals rule and no golden goal.

What is the Round of 32 at the World Cup?

The Round of 32 is the first knockout round of the 2026 World Cup. 32 teams compete in 16 single-elimination matches. It's brand new to this tournament — earlier 32-team World Cups went straight from groups to the Round of 16. The R32 exists because the 48-team format produces 32 knockout qualifiers (24 group qualifiers + 8 best third-place teams).

How does the World Cup 2026 bracket work?

After the Round of 32, the bracket continues:

1. Round of 32 — 16 matches → 16 winners
2. Round of 16 — 8 matches → 8 winners
3. Quarter-finals — 4 matches → 4 winners
4. Semi-finals — 2 matches → 2 winners + 2 losers
5. Third-place playoff — 1 match between the SF losers
6. Final — 1 match

A team that finishes 1st or 2nd in their group plays 5 knockout games to win the trophy. So does a team that advanced as a third-place qualifier.

What happens if a knockout match is tied?

If the score is level after 90 minutes plus stoppage time:

1. Extra time — two 15-minute halves played in full. No golden goal.
2. Penalty shootout — if still tied after 120 minutes.

Is there an away goals rule?

No. The away goals rule was abolished by UEFA and FIFA for international tournaments. World Cup knockouts are single matches at neutral venues, so the question is moot — but even in two-leg ties, away goals no longer break a tie. If aggregate scores are level, it's straight to extra time and penalties.

The bracket is structured so that group winners and runners-up enter on opposite sides, keeping the strongest teams apart in early rounds where possible. A team's full knockout path:
